Generation Science Standards for Grade 4, Earth Science

  • 4-ESS2-1. Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.
  • 4-ESS2-2. Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features.
  • 4-ESS3-2. Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.

We Live in a Watershed!

San Diego-based earth science lessons explore watersheds and water flow, and ways to reduce impacts of natural processes on humans.  Download lessons  Fourth-grade students start in their schoolyard (Part 1) by locating and observing soil, water, plants, animals, and human impacts. They measure water soaking into soil, and observe the slope of various areas.  During their field visit (Part 2), students see what a watershed looks like, how water flows, and evidence of erosion.  Students may take measurements of water soaking into soil in natural areas, and compare it to their schoolyard.  After the field visit (Part 3), students redesign an existing area of the schoolyard to keep it from flooding in the next storm event.  Many lesson extensions and internet resources are provided.

Six lessons adaptable for grades K-12, WaterForAll   This curriculum was developed by San Diego Coastkeeper, and uses the environments that students live in and the local water problems that affect them to teach stewardship and inspire leadership.
